Free museum Sundays in Italy
Domenica al Museo at state sites · Colosseum, Uffizi, Pompeii · Vatican Museums on the last Sunday
On the first Sunday of every month Italy's state museums and archaeological parks are free. Free is not the same as easy: at the Colosseum you queue at the ticket office for a same-day ticket, at the Uffizi there is no advance booking and no priority lane, and some areas stay closed.

How Domenica al Museo works
It is a Ministry of Culture scheme for state-run cultural sites: national museums, archaeological parks, galleries, royal residences. On the first Sunday of each month entry is free, with normal opening hours. Where a museum normally requires or recommends booking, that still applies: each museum sets its own rule.
The list of participating sites is on the Ministry's page, maintained by its local offices, so check it the week before. The Ministry also points to its Musei Italiani app for information and tickets.
Since 2023 three more free days have been added: 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. When one of them falls on a Monday, several museums have moved their weekly closing day so they can open.
Free means free for everyone: there is no EU-citizens-only catch, unlike the reduced tickets for 18–25s, which at the Colosseum apply to European citizens only.
Colosseum, Uffizi, Pompeii: rules that shape your day
Colosseum and Roman Forum. No booking. Free tickets are handed out in order of arrival at two ticket offices, Piazza del Colosseo (near the Temple of Venus and Rome) and Largo della Salara Vecchia, and they are valid only that day. Only individual tickets are issued, so everyone in a guided group collects their own. Closed on the day: the panoramic lift and upper levels, the arena and the underground, several Palatine sites; the Domus Aurea does not take part. If you came for the arena floor, pick another day and pay.
Uffizi and Pitti Palace. No advance tickets: you get your free ticket at the entrance after security, and you cannot leave and re-enter. The priority lane is suspended except for disabled visitors with a companion, pregnant women and EU school groups. Expect a real queue.
Pompeii. Free entry with direct access to the site. Tickets at Pompeii are personal (named), with a cap of 20,000 entries a day.
Who does not take part
Only state sites follow the rule. Not included, for example:
- Vatican Museums: they belong to the Holy See. Their own free day is the last Sunday of the month, 9.00 to 14.00 with last entry at 12.30, so arriving late means not getting in.
- Civic and other non-state sites: the Venice civic museums (including the Doge's Palace) and the Florence Duomo complex with Brunelleschi's Dome, run by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore. Each has its own rules.
Practical tips
- Be there before opening at the big sites. Colosseum and Uffizi queues start early and entry is capped.
- Go small: dozens of lesser-known national museums are also free, and there the free Sunday is simply a bonus visit.
- If you only have one shot at a famous site, buy a normal ticket on another day. You get a time slot, access to areas closed on free Sundays (the Colosseum arena and underground) and a shorter wait.
The cards below list the museums and sites whose official pages say they join the free first Sunday.
FAQ
Which museums are free on the first Sunday of the month in Italy?
State-run museums, galleries and archaeological parks that take part in Domenica al Museo. The Ministry of Culture publishes the list by region and province and keeps it updated.
Is the Colosseum free on the first Sunday?
Yes. Free tickets are handed out first come, first served at the Piazza del Colosseo and Largo della Salara Vecchia ticket offices and are valid that day only. The arena, the underground, the panoramic lift and upper levels are closed, and the Domus Aurea is not included.
Can I book free Sunday tickets online?
Usually not for the big ones. The Colosseum's free tickets cannot be reserved, and the Uffizi says tickets cannot be bought in advance on free days. Smaller museums may require a booking; check each museum's page.
Are the Vatican Museums free on the first Sunday?
No. The Vatican is not an Italian state museum. Its free day is the last Sunday of the month, 9.00 to 14.00, last entry at 12.30.
Are there other free days besides the first Sunday?
Since 2023 the Ministry has added 25 April, 2 June and 4 November as free days at state sites. Check the Ministry's page each year to confirm.
Does a city pass help on free Sundays?
No. Everyone gets in free, and the Campania Artecard states it gives no skip-the-line access on those days. At the Colosseum Roma Pass holders queue at the ticket office like everyone else.
