What you pay and what you see

The Medici Chapels are the family mausoleum of the Medici, built onto the back of San Lorenzo but run as a separate museum with its own entrance on Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini, by the market stalls. One ticket covers it: €11, or €2 for EU citizens aged 18–25; under-18s of any nationality go free. Booking a time costs €3 and is optional. The queue is often short, so walking up is usually fine.

The route starts in the crypt where the grand dukes are buried, climbs to the Chapel of the Princes, a vast dome lined with marble and inlaid semi-precious stone, and ends in Michelangelo's New Sacristy, with the dukes' tombs and the reclining figures of Night, Day, Dawn and Dusk. Most people come for that last room. Save your time for it.

An hour is enough. There's a lift up to the Chapel of the Princes and a platform lift into the New Sacristy. Only small bags and backpacks are allowed in, and there are just a few coin lockers (€1, returned).

Michelangelo's Secret Room

Below the New Sacristy is the small room where, according to the museum, Michelangelo hid during the siege of Florence, and where his drawings were found on the walls under the plaster. It's open by booking only, on a €32 ticket that includes the museum. Visits last 15 minutes with at most four people per slot, so book well ahead. Access is down a narrow 12-step staircase with no lift, and children under 10 aren't admitted.

Combined ticket and partners

If you're also seeing the David, look at the 72-hour combined ticket for €38: Accademia Gallery, Bargello, Medici Chapels, Palazzo Davanzati and Orsanmichele. The date and time you pick is for the Accademia; the Chapels can be visited any time in the following 72 hours.

Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout sell entry and several guided tours at higher prices. For plain entry there's little point; a guide, though, helps you read the New Sacristy, where every detail carries a political or family meaning.

The museum's own staff run a free one-hour themed walk in Italian on Fridays and Sundays at 11 am and noon, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 pm and 5 pm. Entry is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month and on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November, without bookings.
