Three passes, no single tickets

The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, which runs the whole Piazza del Duomo complex, keeps it simple once you get it. The Cathedral is free. Everything else (the Dome, Giotto's Bell Tower, the Baptistery, the Duomo Museum and the Santa Reparata crypt) is sold only as one of three passes:

There are no tickets for individual monuments, so even if you only want the Dome you buy the Brunelleschi Pass. Each pass is valid for 3 days from the date you pick and gives one entry per monument.

The part that catches people out is the time slot. For the Dome you book a climbing time, and the pass carries your name: staff check it against your ID before you go up. You have about 5 minutes' leeway, and passes can't be changed or refunded. The Giotto Pass has a slot for the Bell Tower instead; everything else in your pass you can visit when you like within the 3 days, starting from your booked day.

Note there's no youth or EU discount here as at state museums: reductions are only for ages 7–14, and students get a discount only on the Ghiberti Pass, at the ticket office.

When the Dome is sold out

What you see online is all there is. The Opera says so explicitly: the ticket office on Piazza San Giovanni has no extra Dome availability. In peak months Dome slots often sell out days ahead.

When the official calendar is full, resellers are the only way up. The Opera publishes a list of authorised resellers, and Tiqets is on it; there are also guided Dome tours from other operators. They cost more than the official pass but often have space on dates the Opera's site doesn't. One warning: the Opera says skip-the-line doesn't exist. What you buy from a partner is a timed entry, perhaps with a guide or audio guide, not a secret fast lane. Check exactly what's included and the cancellation terms before paying.

Opening hours: watch out for Sundays

Each monument keeps its own hours, and Sunday is the awkward day:

The whole complex closes on Easter Sunday, 25 December and 1 January. Also worth knowing: the Baptistery's famous ceiling mosaics are under restoration and not visible, and will stay that way for years.

Before you climb

Both the Dome and the Bell Tower are climbed on foot. The Opera warns of narrow, steep passages and connecting staircases: no heels or loose footwear, pushchairs only folded, children under 12 held by the hand, and under-18s only with an adult. You enter the Dome through the Porta della Mandorla and come out through the Porta dei Canonici, and you're not allowed to stop on the stairs. If you have to pick one climb, remember that from the Bell Tower you can see the Dome up close; from the Dome you can't.

Large bags go in the free cloakroom at Piazza Duomo 38/r, next to the Museum entrance. For the Cathedral and Baptistery dress as for a church: shoulders covered, nothing shorter than the knee, no flip-flops. Pack a scarf in summer.

The Museum, with the original Baptistery doors and sculpture by Donatello and Michelangelo, is the most underrated part of the pass. Do the Dome early or late in the day, then come back for the Museum and Bell Tower on day two.

FAQ

How much does it cost to climb Brunelleschi's Dome?

The Dome is only sold as part of the Brunelleschi Pass: €30, €12 for ages 7–14, free under 7. It also includes the Bell Tower, Museum, Baptistery and Santa Reparata for 3 days. The official guided Dome visit costs €50.

Is Florence Cathedral free to enter?

Yes. The Cathedral needs no ticket or booking and is open to visitors Monday to Saturday, 10:15 am to 3:45 pm. It is closed to visitors on Sundays and religious holidays.

Where do I buy official Duomo tickets?

From the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore at tickets.duomo.firenze.it or the ticket office at Piazza San Giovanni 7. The Opera's list of authorised resellers includes Tiqets.

What are the Dome opening hours?

Weekdays from 8:15 am, last slot 6:45 pm; Saturdays last slot 4:30 pm; Sundays and holidays 12:45 to 4:30 pm (last slot).

Is there a skip-the-line ticket for the Duomo?

No. The Opera states that no skip-the-line service exists: your timed slot is what keeps you out of the queue. It says sellers of 'skip the line' Cathedral entry are not authorised.

What is the dress code for Florence Cathedral?

For the Cathedral and Baptistery: covered shoulders, no bare legs above the knee, no flip-flops. It doesn't apply to the Dome, Bell Tower or Museum.

Can I change my Dome time slot?

No. Passes can't be changed, cancelled or refunded, and you have about 5 minutes' leeway on your slot, so leave a margin.
