Official ticket sellers in Italy

Who sells tickets for Italy's big museums, what the booking fee costs, the rules that cost travellers money

The official ticket is almost always the cheapest, but in Italy it is often named, timed, non-refundable and released in blocks. Before buying, check three things: that the site really is the official one, what the booking fee is, and what happens if your plans change.

Who sells what

In Italy "official ticket office" does not always mean the museum itself. Sales are often run by a concessionaire or go through an external platform. The safe way is to start on the museum's own site and follow its "buy" link.

Sight Where the official ticket is sold What to know
Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine ticketing.colosseo.it, call centre, ticket offices Named, timed entry, sales open 30 days ahead; full price € 18,00
Vatican Museums tickets.museivaticani.va (the only official site) € 20,00 + 5,00 online booking fee; beware lookalike domains
Uffizi and Pitti Palace official platform tickets.uffizi.it Named, non-transferable, non-refundable; buying ahead costs more
Florence Duomo, Dome, Bell Tower tickets.duomo.firenze.it (Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore) Brunelleschi Pass 30€; no ticket can be changed or refunded
Doge's Palace and Venice civic museums visitmuve.it Musei di Piazza San Marco: 35,00 € standard, 30,00 € online more than 30 days ahead
Galleria Borghese, Castel Sant'Angelo Gebart Ticketing concessionaire
Pompeii Vivaticket, via the Park's site Named tickets, daily entry cap
Last Supper (Cenacolo) Vivaticket, via the official site Booking always required, sales open in multi-month blocks
Valley of the Temples, MANN, Uffizi (also) CoopCulture Ticketing concessionaire; former Colosseum seller

Rules that cost travellers money

Named tickets. The Colosseum, the Uffizi and Pompeii sell tickets in the visitor's name. At the Colosseum your ID must be visible at the entrance with the ticket, and for visits from 9 May 2026 the name can be changed only once, by midnight seven days before. Type names exactly as in your passport.

Booking fees. Buying ahead is not always cheaper. At the Vatican Museums an online booking adds 5,00 to the ticket. At the Uffizi, a Pitti Palace ticket is 16€ bought on the day and 19€ bought earlier. Venice is the opposite: the Doge's Palace ticket is 30,00 € online if you buy more than 30 days ahead, instead of 35,00 €.

No refunds. Uffizi tickets are non-refundable; Florence Duomo tickets cannot be changed, cancelled or refunded, and the Dome time slot cannot be moved. If your plans are not fixed, this is where a reseller with free cancellation earns its mark-up.

Sales in blocks. The Last Supper releases tickets several months at a time, on a day and hour announced on its official site: note the release date. At the Colosseum, dates open 30 days ahead.

Lookalike sites. The Vatican Museums warn about sites on domains similar to the official one charging much higher prices. A site named after a museum is not necessarily the museum: check the domain.

The Colosseum and CoopCulture case

CoopCulture ran official Colosseum ticket sales from 1997 to 2024. In April 2025 Italy's competition authority (AGCM) fined it 7 million euro, finding that it had not adequately countered bulk buying by automated systems and had kept large numbers of tickets for bundled sales with its own educational tours. The same decision fined six tour operators, Tiqets and GetYourGuide among them, for buying tickets with bots. Colosseum sales now run through ticketing.colosseo.it with named tickets.

When a reseller is the better choice

The official ticket costs less and is issued by the museum: if your date is available and you do not need flexibility, buy there. A reseller such as Tiqets, GetYourGuide or Headout makes sense when:

On every page of this site the official price sits in its own box with its source, and the partners' products are shown separately with their prices, so you can see the difference at a glance.

FAQ

What is the official site for Vatican Museums tickets?

The Vatican Museums say the only official site for online tickets is tickets.museivaticani.va. A full-price ticket booked online costs € 20,00 plus a 5,00 skip-the-line booking fee.

Where do I buy official Colosseum tickets?

On ticketing.colosseo.it, by phone or at the ticket offices. Every ticket type is named, a time slot for the Colosseum is mandatory and sales open 30 days before the visit. Full price is € 18,00.

Are official Italian museum tickets refundable?

Often not. Uffizi tickets are named, non-transferable and non-refundable; Florence Duomo tickets cannot be changed, cancelled or refunded. That is the main reason people pay more for a reseller with free cancellation.

Do I need my passport for a named ticket?

At the Colosseum you must keep an ID document visible at the entrances together with your ticket, so carry the passport or ID card whose name is on the ticket.

How do I avoid fake official sites?

Start from the museum's own website and follow its 'buy' link. The Vatican Museums warn about lookalike domains that charge much higher prices.
