Naples tickets: museums, catacombs and underground sites
What to book ahead · closing days · Artecard or not
Only one Naples ticket needs booking weeks ahead: the Sansevero Chapel with the Veiled Christ, which caps daily visitors and releases slots 60 days in advance. The catacombs and the Bourbon Tunnel must be booked too, while the Archaeological Museum, the Royal Palace, the Treasure of San Gennaro and Naples Underground all work without a reservation. Check closing days before you plan: Tuesdays and Wednesdays ruin more itineraries than queues do.

What to book, and how far ahead
Weeks ahead: only the Sansevero Chapel. Entries are capped, tickets go online 60 days before each date with an extra batch two days before, and the ticket desk has nothing beyond what's on the website. If you're set on the Veiled Christ, book it before your flights are even confirmed.
Booking required: the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso (hourly guided tours in English and Italian, booking always required) and the Bourbon Tunnel (Friday to Sunday and holidays only, fixed tour times).
Walk-in is fine: the Archaeological Museum (no online booking fee, no time slots), the Royal Palace (the date on the ticket isn't binding) and the Treasure of San Gennaro. Naples Underground doesn't take bookings for small groups at all: you queue at Piazza San Gaetano or buy a timed skip-the-line ticket.
Closing days
Tuesday: the MANN and the Sansevero Chapel are shut. Wednesday: the Royal Palace and the catacombs. Monday to Thursday: no scheduled Bourbon Tunnel tours. The Treasure of San Gennaro is open seven days. So Monday works for nearly everything except the tunnel; on Tuesday, plan the Royal Palace, the Treasure and the catacombs; on Wednesday, the MANN, Sansevero and the Treasure.
Is the Artecard worth it?
The Campania Artecard Naples 3 days costs €27 and includes three sites of your choice from its list (the MANN, the Royal Palace and the Treasure of San Gennaro are all on it), reduced entry from the fourth site on, and unlimited travel on the Unicocampania network. Do the maths: MANN €20 + Royal Palace €15 + Treasure €15 = €50 at full price. For an adult hitting those three, it pays.
It doesn't pay for under-18s, who already enter state museums free, nor for EU 18–25s, who pay €2 at the MANN and the Royal Palace. It also leaves out the private headliners: the Sansevero Chapel and Naples Underground aren't on the card, and the catacombs and Bourbon Tunnel only give a discount. On free Sundays the card doesn't get you past the queue.
Free first Sunday
The MANN and the Royal Palace take part in Italy's free first Sunday. At the MANN, though, the Egyptian collection, the Secret Cabinet and Magna Graecia stay closed on those days, and free tickets are collected only at the desk. Private sites like the Sansevero Chapel and Naples Underground always charge.
Grouping sights by day
- Historic centre: Sansevero Chapel, Naples Underground and the Treasure of San Gennaro, all between Via dei Tribunali and Via Duomo.
- MANN and the Sanità: buses from the Museo Nazionale stop reach the Catacombs of San Gennaro in about 15 minutes.
- Plebiscito: the Royal Palace and the Bourbon Tunnel, best on a Friday or weekend when the tunnel is open.
FAQ
What should I book in advance in Naples?
The Sansevero Chapel: timed booking is compulsory and online tickets go on sale 60 days ahead. The Catacombs of San Gennaro and the Bourbon Tunnel also require booking.
Which Naples museums are closed on Tuesdays?
The Archaeological Museum (MANN) and the Sansevero Chapel. The Royal Palace and the catacombs close on Wednesdays. The Treasure of San Gennaro opens every day.
Is the Campania Artecard worth it?
The Naples 3-day pass costs €27 with three entries of your choice plus public transport. It pays off for an adult visiting the MANN, the Royal Palace and the Treasure of San Gennaro; it's pointless for under-18s, who enter state museums free.
Which Naples museums are free on the first Sunday?
State museums such as the MANN and the Royal Palace. The Sansevero Chapel and Naples Underground are private and always charge.
Do I need to book Naples Underground?
No. Turn up at Piazza San Gaetano and you'll get in, though the queue can last up to 90 minutes. Online you can buy a timed skip-the-line ticket.
