Rome tickets: museums and attractions

What to book ahead, what to buy on the day · verified official prices

Only a few places in Rome need booking well ahead: the Colosseum and the Borghese Gallery require a reserved slot even with a Roma Pass, ideally 10 days before your visit, 20 in high season. Many others, from the Baths of Caracalla to Palazzo Barberini, sell tickets on the day. The Roma Pass costs €62.90 for 72 hours and only pays off if you'll also ride public transport.

What to book ahead, and how far

The rule in Rome is to book a handful of things early and keep the rest flexible. The Colosseum (with the Roman Forum and Palatine) and the Borghese Gallery require a reserved slot, even for Roma Pass holders. The official advice is at least 10 days ahead, 20 in high season; Colosseum slots open no more than a month in advance. The Vatican Museums are a separate state with their own tickets and rules, and they're not part of the Roma Pass.

The San Callisto catacombs need an online booking and Priscilla asks every visitor to book. The Baths of Caracalla, Palazzo Barberini and Galleria Corsini, and the Capuchin Crypt sell tickets on the spot or online with no time slot.

Roma Pass: yes or no

The Roma Pass costs €62.90 for 72 hours (2 free entries, reduced prices at the other sites in its network, unlimited public transport) or €38 for 48 hours (1 free entry). It pays off if you're staying outside the centre and riding buses and metro every day, and if you spend the free entries on pricey sites like the Colosseum. It doesn't if you walk everywhere, if you travel with under-18s (they get into Italian state museums free anyway), or if your trip is mostly about the Vatican. It also doesn't cover the Leonardo Express from Fiumicino.

Free first Sundays

On the first Sunday of every month, Italian state sites in the #DomenicalMuseo scheme are free for everyone, including the Baths of Caracalla, Palazzo Barberini and Galleria Corsini. The price you pay is crowds. Where the museum allows it, book your free ticket, and don't waste a Roma Pass free entry on that day.

How much is the Roma Pass and is it worth it?

€62.90 for 72 hours (2 free entries plus public transport) or €38 for 48 hours (1 free entry). It's worth it if you'll use buses and metro daily and spend the free entries on expensive sites. It doesn't cover the Vatican Museums or the Leonardo Express.

For example the Baths of Caracalla, Palazzo Barberini and the Capuchin Crypt: you buy on the spot or online without a fixed time. Bookings mostly matter on free-entry days.

How do I get from the airport to central Rome?

From Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express reaches Termini in 32 minutes for €14. Ciampino has no direct train: use a shuttle bus or a fixed-fare taxi.
