One ticket, valid for 8 days
Ostia is refreshingly simple. There's one combined ticket at €18, valid for 8 consecutive days at every site in the park: the excavations and the Ostiense Museum, plus the Castle of Julius II, the Imperial Ports of Claudius and Trajan, the Isola Sacra necropolis and the Ship Museum. The €2 reduced rate is for EU citizens aged 18–25 (and some non-EU residents with a permit), and EU citizens under 18 are free, so carry ID. Prices can go up during temporary exhibitions.
No booking is needed. The ticket office takes cash and cards; you can also buy online through CoopCulture, the park's official ticketing partner, or in the Musei Italiani app.
Seasonal hours: check before you go
The excavations open at 8:30am, Tuesday to Sunday. Closing time moves with the season: 4:30pm from 25 October to the end of February, 5:15pm in March, 7pm from April to September and 6:30pm in early October. Last entry and the ticket office close an hour earlier, so in winter you need to be through the gate by 3:30pm.
The Ostiense Museum inside the site opens later and closes earlier than the ruins, and it shuts completely on free first Sundays and the other free days.
Official ticket or a tour?
If you're coming by train, the official ticket is all you need. Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout sell the same entry for more, which only makes sense if you want everything in one app. Where partners genuinely add value is tours from Rome with transport and guided visits: the site is big and without context much of it reads as brick walls. The official audio guide (€7 long route, €5 short) sits in between.
Getting there and what to bring
By train, get off at Ostia Antica, cross the footbridge and follow the signs. Drivers come via Via Ostiense; the visitor car park is unattended and open 7:30am–7:30pm.
- Proper shoes: Roman paving is uneven.
- No picnics inside the site; there's a café, plus vending machines.
- Dogs are allowed on a lead.
- Wheelchair users: the paved road from the ticket office to the museum is accessible; much of the rest is not.
- No drones: the site is in the Fiumicino airport no-fly zone.
