Reseller prices are refreshed daily; the final price is the one on the partner's site. Resellers cost more than the official ticket because they add availability, free cancellation or services.
Do you need to book?
No, the Vatican Museums don't require a booking. A full-price ticket is €20 at the desk on the day. Booking on tickets.museivaticani.va costs the same €20 plus a €5 "skip the line" booking fee, and buys you a fixed entry time and no ticket-desk queue. On a quiet weekday off-season you can gamble on the desk; at Easter, in summer or on any trip with a tight schedule, pay the €5.
Two rules catch people out. Tickets are valid only on the day issued, and they are non-refundable. Book once your dates are firm.
Search results are full of sites with official-looking names. The museums themselves say that tickets.museivaticani.va is the only official online shop and warn about look-alike domains charging inflated prices. Legitimate resellers sell under their own brand and don't pretend otherwise.
Discounts that actually apply to you
The reduced ticket (€10, plus €5 if booked) is for ages 7 to 18, clergy and religious with documents, and Vatican staff. Students up to 25 also pay €10, but the rule asks for a document from your school or university proving enrolment for the current year. If you can't show proof at the entrance, the reduced ticket is cancelled, you buy a new full-price one, and the reduced one isn't refunded.
Free entry applies to children under 7, and to visitors with a certified disability of at least 67% plus one companion if needed. Disabled visitors don't book online: they get their tickets at the Special Permits desk or the Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, with priority access.
The official price list has no senior rate and no EU/non-EU distinction: the Vatican is not an Italian state museum, so Italy's under-18 and EU-youth rules don't apply here.
Self-guided or guided tour
The route is long and the Sistine Chapel comes near the end, so first-timers often arrive there tired after rushing the famous rooms. A guided tour gives you an order, chosen stops, and usually a pre-arranged entry time.
Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout sell skip-the-line entry and group or semi-private tours, often paired with St Peter's Basilica. They cost more than the official ticket. You're paying for availability when the official calendar is full, more flexible cancellation, and the guide. If you just want to walk around, the booked official ticket is the cheapest option.
Planning St Peter's right after? The museums advise visitors going on to the Basilica not to leave bags in the museum cloakroom. Travel light.
Opening hours and closed days
Monday to Saturday the museums open 8:00–20:00, last entry 18:00. Staff start clearing the galleries 30 minutes before closing, so a late entry means a short visit.
Sundays are closed except the last Sunday of the month, when the museums open 9:00–14:00 (last entry 12:30) and entry is free. Expect a long queue. If that Sunday falls on a holiday such as Easter, they stay shut.
The museums also close on Vatican holidays, which don't always match Italian ones: 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, Easter Monday, 1 May, 29 June, a couple of days around 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. Check the official calendar PDF before you lock in a date.
Rules at the door
The dress code covers the museums, Sistine Chapel, Basilica and Gardens: no bare shoulders or low necklines, no shorts above the knee, no miniskirts, no hats. In summer carry a light shirt or scarf.
In the Sistine Chapel you stay silent and can't take photos, video or use your phone, and guards can make you delete pictures on the spot. Large umbrellas, walking poles and tripods go to the cloakroom, which is free. The entrance is on Viale Vaticano, along the Vatican walls. From Termini take Metro A to Ottaviano and walk about ten minutes.
FAQ
How much are Vatican Museums tickets?
€20 full price at the desk, or €20 plus a €5 booking fee online. Reduced tickets are €10 (plus €5 online) for ages 7–18, students up to 25 with proof of enrolment, and clergy.
What is the official Vatican Museums ticket website?
tickets.museivaticani.va is the only official online shop. The museums themselves warn about look-alike domains that charge much higher prices.
Are the Vatican Museums open on Sundays?
Only on the last Sunday of the month, 9:00–14:00 with last entry at 12:30, when entry is free. All other Sundays are closed, as are Vatican holidays such as 8, 25 and 26 December.
What is the Vatican dress code?
Shoulders covered, no low-cut tops, no shorts above the knee, no miniskirts and no hats. The same rule applies in the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica.
Is the student discount valid with an ISIC card?
The official rule asks for a document from your school or university proving enrolment for the current year, for students up to 25. If staff don't accept your proof, the reduced ticket is cancelled and you pay a new full ticket.
Can you take photos in the Sistine Chapel?
No photos, video or phone use in the Sistine Chapel. Elsewhere in the museums, personal photos without flash are allowed.
