Trieste, Trento & North-East Italy tickets

Scrovegni Chapel, Miramare Castle, MUSE · what to book and when

In north-east Italy the one visit you can't improvise is the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua: advance booking is compulsory up to the day before, in groups of 25. Miramare Castle in Trieste sells tickets at the door and its park is free. MUSE in Trento is best bought online for guaranteed entry, and it's free on the first Sunday of the month.

What to book

Scrovegni Chapel, Padua: compulsory booking. The strictest rule in the region. Slots of up to 25 people every 15 minutes, booked online or by phone up to the day before; no same-day bookings. The ticket office is at the Eremitani Museums, about 100 m from the chapel, and you must be at the chapel entrance 5 minutes before your slot or lose it. If Padua is on your route, book this before anything else. Bags and suitcases don't go in, so leave luggage elsewhere.

MUSE, Trento: buy online for guaranteed entry. Not compulsory, but only a timed online ticket guarantees you get in; at the desk the slots may be full. On the first Sunday of the month entry is free, and you still need to book a slot.

Miramare Castle, Trieste: you can buy on the spot. The castle is open every day of the year, 9am–7pm, with the ticket desk closing at 6.30pm. The park is free and opens at 8am. Only the Castelletto and the kitchens are by booking.

Passes and free days

In Padua, the pass to consider is the Urbs Picta Card: €28 for 48 hours or €35 for 72 hours, buses and trams included, with one entry to eight sites of the 14th-century fresco cycles, the Scrovegni Chapel among them. If you'll also see Palazzo della Ragione and the Basilica of St Anthony, it's worth a look.

In Trento the Verona Card gets you into MUSE free, handy if you're coming up from Verona with a card still running. MUSE is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month.

At Miramare, 4 November (National Unity Day) is a free-entry day for the castle, as are the other national free days at Italian state museums. The EU-only €2 rate for 18–25s needs ID.

One city a day

Padua, Trieste and Trento lie in three different directions, so give each its own day.
