Duomo, Last Supper, La Scala, Sforza Castle, Brera and San Siro · official prices checked
Only one Milan ticket really needs booking far ahead: Leonardo's Last Supper, which releases tickets in blocks of months and sells out. Book weeks ahead
The one that catches people out is Leonardo's Last Supper. Only 40 people go in every 15 minutes, booking is compulsory even for babies, and tickets are released in blocks of several months, plus a small top-up every Wednesday at noon for the following week. Build your trip around your Last Supper slot, not the other way round. If official dates are gone, resellers' guided tours are the realistic fallback. Tickets are named, so bring the passport that matches.
The other one to book early is the guided La Scala theatre tour with the Royal Box: few places, only on days without rehearsals, released month by month. The La Scala Museum itself you can buy on the spot.
Fine to buy late
The Duomo doesn't require booking and every ticket is valid for 2 days; buying online just skips the ticket-desk line. Mind the dress code: no bare shoulders, shorts or hats inside. Sforza Castle has free courtyards and a ticket desk for the museums. San Siro sells at the Gate 6 box office, but check the fixtures: on match days the tour closes early or not at all. The Pinacoteca di Brera sells timed tickets online, and there's a ticket desk too.
Free Sundays and the city pass
On the first Sunday of the month the Last Supper and the Pinacoteca di Brera (both booking-only) and the Sforza Castle museums are free. The Duomo isn't.
The city's official pass is the YesMilano City Pass, bundling museums, attractions and public transport; at La Scala, for one, it gets you into the museum free. Before buying, add up the official prices of the places you'll really visit: on a short stay with two or three museums, single tickets are often enough.
Grouping your days
- Day 1, centre: Duomo and rooftop in the morning, then through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele to the La Scala Museum on the other side.
- Day 2, west: the Last Supper at your slot, then Sforza Castle and the Pinacoteca di Brera, all on metro lines M1 and M2 (Cadorna, Cairoli, Lanza).
- Extra half day: San Siro on metro M5, on a day without a home game.
From the airports: Malpensa Express from Malpensa, metro M4 from Linate, direct buses from Bergamo.
FAQ
What should I book in advance in Milan?
Above all the Last Supper: booking is compulsory for everyone and dates sell out early. The guided La Scala theatre tour with the Royal Box also has few places and is released month by month.
Which Milan museums are free on the first Sunday of the month?
Of the sights in this guide: the Last Supper and the Pinacoteca di Brera (both with booking) and the Sforza Castle museums. The Duomo and La Scala Museum are not.
What can I see for free in Milan?
The Sforza Castle courtyards, open daily 7am–7:30pm. The Duomo is free only for worshippers; sightseeing needs a ticket.
Is a Milan city pass worth it?
It depends on how many paid sights you'll actually visit. The city's official pass is the YesMilano City Pass; it gets you into the La Scala Museum free, for example. Add up the official prices of what you really plan to see first.
How do I get from Milan's airports to the centre?
From Malpensa on the Malpensa Express (€15), from Linate on metro M4 (€2.20 ATM ticket), from Bergamo on direct buses to Milano Centrale.
