Museum ticket or theatre tour?

There are two ways into La Scala without an opera ticket.

The Museo Teatrale alla Scala, entered from Largo Ghiringhelli on Piazza della Scala, costs €12. You get portraits, busts, memorabilia of opera's big names, musical instruments and a temporary show. The real draw, though, is the view into the auditorium from the third-tier boxes. The catch: it only happens when there are no rehearsals or performances, and just 6 people fit at a time (4 during rehearsals). Every two weeks the museum posts the time slots with the best chance; check them before you pick a time.

The guided theatre tour (€35, museum included, 60 minutes) goes much further: the Ridotto Toscanini, the historic second-tier boxes, the Royal Box and the foyer. It runs Monday to Saturday on days with no rehearsals, with the next month's dates usually published around the 25th. No reductions, not for children under 12, and not suitable if walking is difficult.

Online sales add a commission. Under-6s, disabled visitors and their companion, and holders of the YesMilano City Pass or Abbonamento Musei Lombardia go free.

Official or reseller

The museum sells at museoscala.vivaticket.it and at the desk, and itself recommends buying online to avoid the queue.

One thing worth knowing: according to the museum, only its in-house guides may take visitors into the auditorium itself. Tiqets and Headout sell guided La Scala tours with entry included; before booking, check on the product page whether the tour enters the historic boxes or covers the museum and the view from the boxes. What resellers add is availability and, on some Tiqets offers, cancellation up to your time slot.

Timing

The museum is open every day 9:30am–5:30pm (last entry 5pm), but the auditorium view depends on the rehearsal schedule, so check the museum's suggested slots first. Allow 45 minutes. Closed 7, 25 and 26 December, 1 January, Easter, 1 May and 15 August.

The Duomo is at the other end of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, so the two fit into one morning.
