Lazio beyond Rome: tickets for day trips

Tivoli, Castel Gandolfo and MagicLand · what to book and what not to

Nothing in Lazio outside Rome needs booking weeks ahead. Tivoli's villas take walk-ins and are free on the first Sunday of the month; the Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo keeps hours that change day by day; MagicLand is much cheaper if you buy a fixed-date ticket online. The skill is picking the right day.

What to book, and what to skip booking

Tivoli. Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa are state-run, and booking is optional: turn up, pay €15, walk in. Under-18s are free. On the first Sunday of the month, 25 April, 2 June and 4 November everyone gets in free, but nothing can be booked on those days and free tickets are printed at the desk only. Villa Gregoriana, the third villa, belongs to the FAI heritage trust and has its own ticket, sold online with no fee.

Castel Gandolfo. The Papal Palace and Secret Garden are sold only on the Vatican Museums' official site or at the palace desk, €12. You don't have to book, but you must check the calendar: some days close at 14:30, others at 18:30, and some are closure days. The Vatican Museums' free last Sunday doesn't apply here.

MagicLand. The theme park at Valmontone uses dynamic pricing, and the gap between online and the gate is wide: full tickets start at €19.90 online for a fixed date versus €39.90 at the gate. Once your date is set, buy online.

The Tivoli pass

The VILLÆ Pass costs €30 and covers Hadrian's Villa, Villa d'Este and the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor for 72 hours. Two full villa tickets also cost €30, so the pass saves nothing; it just adds the Sanctuary and lets you come back the next day. It doesn't include Villa Gregoriana. The reduced pass (€4) is for EU citizens aged 18–25 only.

How to plan the days

Tivoli deserves a full day: Hadrian's Villa in the morning, Villa d'Este in the afternoon. On a Monday that order is compulsory, because Villa d'Este doesn't open until 2 pm. Castel Gandolfo lies south-east of Rome in the Alban Hills: half a day, ideally on one of the palace's long-hours days. MagicLand is a day of its own, and only at weekends in the cold months.

Without a car, regional trains serve both Tivoli and Castel Gandolfo from Rome. Partners also sell day trips with transport, which cost more than the official tickets because you're paying for the ride. Each place's page has official prices, hours and the reseller options side by side.

FAQ

Do I need to book Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa?

No. Booking is optional and you can buy at the ticket desk: €15 per villa, free under 18. On free-entry days there's no booking at all and free tickets are only issued at the desk.

Is the Tivoli VILLÆ Pass worth it?

It costs €30 for 72 hours at Hadrian's Villa, Villa d'Este and the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor. Two full-price villa tickets already cost €30, so it only pays if you add the Sanctuary or spread visits over several days.

Can I do Tivoli and Castel Gandolfo in one day?

In theory, but they're on opposite sides of Rome. Give Tivoli a full day and Castel Gandolfo half a day.

Is Castel Gandolfo free on the last Sunday like the Vatican Museums?

No. That free Sunday applies to the Vatican Museums in Rome only. Castel Gandolfo tickets are €12 on the official Vatican site.

Is MagicLand open year-round?

No. It follows a calendar and in autumn and winter opens mostly at weekends, bridge days and over Christmas. Online fixed-date tickets start at €19.90 against €39.90 at the gate.
