Venice tickets

Museums, St Mark's, gondolas and transport · prices from the official sites

Two bookings really matter in Venice: St Mark's Basilica, which uses named, timed tickets, and the Doge's Palace, where untimed tickets only get you in from 12:00. Everything else can be sorted calmly. If you're visiting for the day in spring or summer, also check the city's access fee for day-trippers.

Book these ahead

St Mark's Basilica. Named, timed tickets from the Procuratoria's site; you enter only in your slot, with ID. Closed to visitors on Sunday mornings. Cover shoulders and knees.

Doge's Palace. Booking the St Mark's Square Museums ticket isn't compulsory, but without a time slot you can't enter the palace before 12:00. Want the morning? Buy a timed ticket online.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Scala del Bovolo. Timed slots are recommended, not required. The Guggenheim is closed on Tuesdays.

No need to book

La Fenice can't be booked for a self-guided visit even if you try — you buy at the theatre's box office and walk in. Gondolas leave from the stations at a city-set fare per boat. Vaporetto tickets and ACTV passes are bought and validated, with no times attached.

Pass or no pass

The civic museums' Museum Pass costs €50, runs 6 months and needs no booking: the Doge's Palace plus eleven more civic museums, the island ones included. It doesn't cover St Mark's Basilica or the Campanile (run by the Procuratoria), or the Guggenheim. Do the maths: the St Mark's Square Museums ticket (€35) plus the Island Museums ticket (€20) already beats it. If you only care about the headline sights, buy single tickets.

First Sundays and the day-tripper fee

On the first Sunday of every month the Gallerie dell'Accademia, a state museum, is free for everyone. The Doge's Palace, the Basilica and the Guggenheim don't join in.

The access fee (contributo di accesso) applies to visitors over 14 who come to the historic city for the day. So far, people staying overnight in accommodation within the municipality have been exempt but had to register on the city's portal. The city has already set the next calendar: 72 days from Good Friday (26 March) to the Ferragosto Sunday (15 August), mostly weekends and long weekends, 8:30am–4:30pm, up to €10. Exemptions and how to pay are still to be confirmed, so check the official portal before you travel.

How to split your days

Only one day? Keep the Basilica and the Doge's Palace, and save the rest for next time.

FAQ

What should I book in advance in Venice?

St Mark's Basilica (named, timed tickets) and, if you want a morning visit, the Doge's Palace. Timed slots are also recommended for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Scala Contarini del Bovolo.

Is there a Venice pass that covers everything?

No. The Museum Pass (€50, 6 months) covers the civic museums including the Doge's Palace, but not St Mark's Basilica, the Campanile, the Guggenheim or public transport.

Are Venice museums free on the first Sunday of the month?

State museums such as the Gallerie dell'Accademia are, under the Domenica al Museo scheme. The Doge's Palace, St Mark's Basilica and the Guggenheim don't take part.

Do I have to pay to enter Venice?

On set days, yes: visitors over 14 who come to the historic city for the day pay the access fee. For the next calendar the city has fixed 72 days from 26 March to 15 August, 8:30am–4:30pm, up to €10.

What can I see in Venice in one day?

St Mark's Basilica in the first morning slot, the Doge's Palace on a timed ticket, then the Rialto and the Grand Canal on vaporetto line 1. The Campanile at sunset if you have time left.
