How the visit works

La Fenice opens to visitors every day when the stage isn't in use. Tours are run by Fest Fenice, the company controlled by the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice. A ticket is €12; €9 for over-65s and €7 for students aged 7 to 26; children up to 6 go free. Families with kids aged 7–18 can get a Family Pass, from €25 with one child up to €40 with four.

The rule here is the opposite of most Venice sights: you don't book, and you can't. Walk up, pay at the box office in Campo San Fantin, go in. If you'd rather pay ahead, Venezia Unica sells the ticket in advance — optional.

The price includes an audio guide in 10 languages, while stocks last; you need one personal ID to get it, so bring a passport or ID card, not just a phone. The same guide is also in the theatre's official app for Android and iOS. The ticket also covers a permanent exhibition on Maria Callas and her Venice years.

Hours and timing

Visits run daily, 9:30am–6pm, as first and last admission. The theatre warns that times and the route can change at the last minute for technical or artistic reasons — this is a working opera house, not a museum. If La Fenice is the main thing on your day, don't leave it to the last hour.

Plan on about 40 minutes with the audio guide. Personal photos are fine on days without rehearsals.

Audio guide or guided tour

The theatre does run guided tours, but only for pre-formed groups (minimum charge €160, about 45 minutes); they don't put individuals together on the spot. If you're on your own, a couple or a family, a partner tour is the only way to get a live guide: Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout all sell a La Fenice guided tour.

Partners also sell "skip-the-line" entry with audio guide. It's the same ticket as at the box office, with a markup. Since the official visit can't be booked, you aren't buying a guaranteed slot — just a prepaid ticket. Worth it only if you want everything paid before you travel.

Seeing a performance

To see it full, with an orchestra in the pit, buy opera, ballet or concert tickets from the theatre: the box office in Campo San Fantin is open daily 10am–5pm, and tickets are also sold at Venezia Unica offices around the city. Dress code: afternoon shows are smart-casual, but shorts or sleeveless T-shirts won't get you into the auditorium, and the ticket isn't refunded.

La Fenice sits in one of the lowest parts of Venice; when a tide of 100 cm or more is forecast, the theatre suggests rubber boots.
