Murano, Burano & Torcello tours

The northern lagoon islands · public boat, island cruise or glass-blowing tour

You can reach Murano and Burano on the regular ACTV vaporetto: a single 75-minute ticket is €9.50, so if you're doing two or three islands in a day the €25 24-hour pass pays for itself. If you'd rather not deal with connections, Alilaguna runs a scheduled Murano–Torcello–Burano cruise for €25 a head, and partners sell boat tours with a glass-blowing demonstration.

Doing it yourself by vaporetto

The islands are on the normal ACTV network — same boats, same tickets as in the centre. No booking: buy, validate every time you board, go.

A single ACTV ticket is €9.50 for 75 minutes. Venice–Murano–Burano–Venice is at least three rides, so the €25 Venezia Daily Pass (24 hours from first validation) pays off immediately and covers your evening vaporetto in town too. If you buy on board, it's card only — no cash.

DIY is the right call if you want lunch on Burano, time in the museums, or a slow afternoon on Torcello without anyone calling you back to the boat.

The Alilaguna island cruise

Alilaguna — the company that runs the airport boats — operates the Linea Verde, a Murano–Torcello–Burano excursion for €25 per person, daily except 25 December. You board at Ferrovia (Santa Lucia), Zattere or San Marco Giardinetti. It takes about 4½ hours from San Marco and 5½ from the station, with roughly 45 minutes on each island and commentary in several languages depending on the departure. It needs at least 4 passengers to run.

It's the middle option: no connections to figure out, about the price of a day pass, but 45 minutes per island is tight if you also want a museum.

Partner tours: glass, guides, private boats

Tours sold by Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout fall into three groups:

Compared with DIY, you pay for convenience and the furnace visit, and give up the freedom to linger.

Museums worth the stop

The Glass Museum on Murano (€15, reduced €7.50) tells the real history of Murano glass, the bit the showrooms skip. Summer hours (1 April–31 October) 10am–6pm, winter 10am–5pm. Reductions apply to ages 6–14, students 15–25 and over-65s, regardless of nationality.

The Lace Museum on Burano (€7, reduced €3.50) is small, and its best feature is the lace makers working there during opening hours. Open 10am–4pm, last entry 3:30pm, closed Mondays.

For both, the Island Museums ticket at €20 adds the Torcello Museum and is valid 3 months. The MUVE Museum Pass covers all three as well.

On Torcello, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta is included with any St Mark's Basilica ticket for six months after purchase. If you've done St Mark's, keep that ticket on your phone.

Planning the day

Many trips run the same loop: Murano, then Torcello, then Burano. With a day pass you can do it backwards — Burano early, Murano in the afternoon — and spend most of the day out of step with the groups. Just remember the Lace Museum's Monday closure.

FAQ

How do I get from Venice to Murano and Burano?

By ACTV vaporetto. For Murano: lines 4.1, 4.2 or 3 from the train station or Piazzale Roma to Museo Murano, or line 7 from San Zaccaria. For Burano: ride to Fondamente Nove and change to line 12.

How much is the vaporetto to Burano?

A standard ACTV ticket is €9.50 for 75 minutes. The Venezia Daily Pass is €25 for 24 hours on the whole water-bus network, which beats singles once you take three boats.

Is there a cheap organised trip to the islands?

Alilaguna's Linea Verde is a scheduled Murano–Torcello–Burano cruise at €25 per person, with about 45 minutes on each island. It boards at the train station, Zattere and San Marco Giardinetti.

Can I see glass blowing on Murano for free?

Furnaces that do demonstrations are private businesses, so we can't promise a free one. The reliable way is a tour that includes a demonstration; the Glass Museum covers the history.

How much is the Burano Lace Museum?

€7 full, €3.50 reduced. It's open 10am–4pm (last entry 3:30pm) and closed on Mondays. Lace makers work there during opening hours.

How long do I need for Murano, Burano and Torcello?

A good half day. The Alilaguna cruise takes 4½ hours from San Marco and 5½ from the station.
