Venice gondola rides

City-set fare per boat · up to 5 passengers

A gondola ride in Venice costs €90 for 30 minutes during the day and €110 for 35 minutes after 7pm. That's the fare set by the city council, and it's per gondola, not per person, for up to 5 passengers. You can simply walk up to a gondola station; if you're travelling solo or as a couple, a shared ride booked online costs less than a whole boat.

The official fare

Gondoliers don't set their own prices. The fare is fixed by Venice's city council (resolution no. 89 of 20 April 2023):

That's per gondola. Two people or five, the boat costs the same. So do the maths: a group of four or five splitting the city fare often pays less each than five seats on a shared ride. For a couple it's the other way round.

The city says a ride can run a few minutes over or under because of traffic, tide and weather. 27 minutes instead of 30 isn't a scam; 15 is. Agree the route and the length before you step in, and if you want longer, ask the price first, not at the end. Seasons don't change the fare: January costs the same as August, just with shorter queues.

Where to get one

Gondolas leave from stazi, the gondoliers' own landing stages. The city lists around a dozen — Molo, Danieli, Dogana, Trinità, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, San Beneto, Carbon, Santa Sofia, San Marcuola and others. Each has a phone number or email if you want to fix a time; otherwise just turn up.

The stations around St Mark's have the longest lines and the busiest water. Ask your gondolier to go through the small canals (rii) — that's the part worth paying for: narrow water, quiet, façades you can't see from any street.

Private, shared or bundled

Online you'll find three different things, and it helps to know which one you're buying.

Pre-booked private ride. Same gondola you'd get at the stazio, but with a guaranteed date and time, paid in advance. Worth it for a specific evening — a proposal, an anniversary. It costs more than the city fare because someone is selling it to you.

Shared ride. You get a seat on a gondola with other people, usually on the Grand Canal, and pay per person. For solo travellers and couples this is the cheapest way onto a gondola. Tiqets and GetYourGuide both sell several, some with live or app commentary.

Gondola as part of a tour. Walking tours or Basilica tours that end with a gondola ride. Handy if Venice is a day trip.

Serenades aren't covered by the city fare; they're sold as a separate experience.

When to go

Daytime shows you the colours of the canals and details on the palaces. After 7pm you pay the evening fare, but boat traffic drops and the Grand Canal goes quiet. The hour before sunset is what everyone wants — if there's one date that matters, that's the only time when booking ahead really makes sense.

What a gondola ride isn't

The traghetto, a gondola that ferries people across the Grand Canal at a few fixed points, is a separate public service for getting from one bank to the other, not a sightseeing ride, and this fare doesn't apply. And if you just want to see the Grand Canal palaces from the water for little money, the vaporetto does that — it just isn't a gondola.

FAQ

How much is a gondola ride in Venice?

The official city fare is €90 for 30 minutes between 9am and 7pm, and €110 for 35 minutes from 7pm to 4am. It's the price for the whole gondola, up to 5 people.

Is the gondola price per person?

No. The official fare is per boat: the same €90 whether there are two of you or five. Shared rides sold online are priced per seat.

How many people fit in a gondola?

Up to 5 passengers under the city's rules.

Do I need to book a gondola ride?

No. Go to a gondola station (stazio) and leave from there. Stations also take bookings by phone or email, and online partners sell rides at fixed times.

How long is a gondola ride?

30 minutes by day, 35 in the evening. The city notes it can vary by a few minutes with boat traffic, tide and weather; longer rides are priced in proportion to time.
