Tivoli tickets: Villa d'Este, Hadrian's Villa & Villa Gregoriana

Three villas, three separate tickets · booking optional · Villa d'Este opens at 2 pm on Mondays

Each villa in Tivoli has its own ticket. Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa are state-run and cost €15 each; Villa Gregoriana belongs to the FAI heritage trust and costs €10. Under-18s get into the two state villas free, and you don't need to book ahead. The one rule that wrecks day trips: on Mondays Villa d'Este doesn't open until 2 pm.

How the tickets work

Tivoli is not one ticket. Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) are run by the Italian Ministry of Culture through an institute called VILLÆ: €15 each, €2 reduced for 18–25s, free for anyone under 18. Villa Gregoriana is run by the FAI, Italy's National Trust equivalent, with its own prices (€10 full, €3 for ages 6–18) and its own ticket office. If you're travelling with teenagers, Gregoriana is the only one of the three where they pay.

The official online shop for the two state villas runs on Midaticket and is linked from villae.cultura.gov.it. Booking is optional, so on most days you can simply turn up and pay. The FAI sells Gregoriana tickets online at no extra charge, and the ticket includes an audio guide you download to your phone in English, French or German, among others. Bring your own earphones.

The VILLÆ Pass, honestly

The VILLÆ Pass costs €30 and covers Hadrian's Villa, Villa d'Este and the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor for 72 hours from your first entry. Two full-price villa tickets already add up to €30, so the pass saves nothing on the big two; what it gives you is the Sanctuary thrown in and the freedom to spread visits over three days. EU citizens aged 18–25 pay €4 for the pass. Non-EU visitors in that age group should expect to pay full price for the pass.

Mondays, free Sundays and dry fountains

On Mondays Villa d'Este opens at 2 pm, while Hadrian's Villa opens in the morning as usual. A Monday visit has one sensible order: Hadrian's Villa first, Villa d'Este after lunch.

On the first Sunday of the month (and on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November) the state villas are free for everyone. There's no booking on those days: free tickets are printed only at the desk, and when it's busy entry to Villa d'Este can be staggered. If that's your only day, be there at opening time.

After heavy rain the Aniene river swells and Villa d'Este may switch its fountains off for a few days. Without water the place loses most of its point, so check the weather in the days before. The water organ of the Organ Fountain plays every two hours from 10:30; plan your route so you're there on the half hour.

Hours and a one-day plan

Villa d'Este lets visitors in from 8:30. Last entry is 4 pm from November to January and 6:45 pm from May to August, with the gardens closing an hour later; the exit is the gate on Piazza Campitelli. Hadrian's Villa has earlier last entries: 3:30 pm in winter, 6 pm from April to September. Both close on 1 January and 25 December. Villa Gregoriana is open from 14 February to 20 December; in November it closes at 4:30 pm, last entry an hour before.

Two villas fit in a day; three is a rush. Villa d'Este and Villa Gregoriana are both in Tivoli's old town and connected on foot. Hadrian's Villa is outside, in the district named after it, so you'll need a bus or a taxi. It's a huge archaeological site with dirt paths and slopes: wear proper shoes and carry water. From Rome, the cleanest plan is Hadrian's Villa early, then Villa d'Este in the afternoon.

Villa Gregoriana is a park in the Aniene gorge, with steep paths and many steps. The FAI advises against pushchairs and warns that it is hard going for visitors with limited mobility or heart problems. It's a 5-minute walk (400 m) from Tivoli station; you enter at Largo Sant'Angelo and climb out at the Temple of Vesta. Buses from Rome leave from Ponte Mammolo on Metro line B.

Official tickets or a tour?

For the state villas the official ticket is the cheapest option, and since booking is optional a reseller's "skip the line" adds little. Where partners earn their price is transport. Tiqets sells Villa d'Este plus Hadrian's Villa with a round-trip transfer from Rome, which saves you from piecing together regional trains and local buses. You pay more than the two official tickets because you're paying for the ride. For Villa Gregoriana, Tiqets sells the standard entry ticket: the visit is the same, only the checkout differs.

FAQ

How much are Villa d'Este tickets?

€15 full price, €2 reduced for ages 18–25, free under 18. Hadrian's Villa has the same prices but needs its own ticket.

Do I need to book Villa d'Este or Hadrian's Villa in advance?

No. Booking is optional: buy on the official VILLÆ online shop or at the ticket desk. On free-entry days nothing can be booked and free tickets are only issued at the desk.

What are Villa d'Este's opening hours?

Daily from 8:30, but from 2 pm on Mondays. Last entry ranges from 4 pm in winter to 6:45 pm from May to August, and the gardens close an hour later. Closed 1 January and 25 December.

Is there a combined ticket for Tivoli?

The VILLÆ Pass costs €30 (€4 for EU citizens aged 18–25) and covers Hadrian's Villa, Villa d'Este and the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor within 72 hours of first entry. Villa Gregoriana is not included.

Is this the same as Tivoli Gardens?

No. Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park in Copenhagen. This Tivoli is a hill town east of Rome, and its 'gardens' are the Renaissance fountains of Villa d'Este.

When is entry free?

The first Sunday of every month, 25 April, 2 June and 4 November, plus 8 March for women. Expect crowds and no advance booking.
