The price changed, and the rules are strict

For centuries the Pantheon was free to walk into. Since 2023 there's been a ticket, and from 1 July the full price went up from €5 to €7 under a new agreement between Italy's Ministry of Culture and the Diocese of Rome. Many blogs and booking pages still show the old price.

The €2 reduced ticket follows the Italian state museum rule: EU citizens from 18 up to their 25th birthday. Under-18s of any nationality go free.

Official tickets come from three places only: the Musei Italiani website, the Musei Italiani app, and the desks and ticket machines on site. Online you choose a date and a one-hour slot and pay through Italy's PagoPA system; you'll need to register on the portal first. Each ticket carries the visitor's name. At the entrance you show the original ticket and an ID (a copy is accepted). If the name doesn't match, you may not get in and there's no refund. You can change a name once in your account, up to 72 hours before the slot.

What "fast track" really means here

The Ministry's page is blunt: entry is in order of arrival and skip-the-line options don't exist. A "fast track" ticket from any seller does not get you past the queue at the door. At most it spares you the ticket-desk queue, which buying on the official portal also does.

What resellers do add is content. GetYourGuide and Tiqets sell entry with an audio guide or an interactive app, useful if you want the story of the dome, Raphael's tomb and the tombs of Italy's kings without hunting for panels. Headout and Tiqets run small-group guided visits, some inside a walking tour that takes in the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona. If all you want is to stand under the dome for twenty minutes, the official €7 ticket is the simplest choice.

Hours, Mass and free Sundays

The Pantheon is open every day from 9:00 to 19:00, last entry 18:30, but the ticket desks close at 18:00. Turn up at 18:15 without a ticket and you're likely out of luck. Each slot admits up to 1,200 people, so it's never empty; opening time is your best chance of some space.

It's still a working church. During Mass (Saturdays and the eve of holidays at 17:00, Sundays and holidays at 10:30) entry is free for people attending the service, not for sightseeing, and ticket sales stop an hour before every service. Hours can shift for religious celebrations. It's closed on 25 December and 1 January unless a special opening is announced.

On the first Sunday of the month entry is free for everyone. Free tickets are handed out at the desks and machines with no priority access, so the queue is long.

Inside, keep quiet and switch your phone to silent. No eating, drinking or smoking, and no animals except guide dogs and certified assistance animals.

Getting there

The Pantheon is on Piazza della Rotonda in the historic centre. There's no metro stop outside: the nearest is Barberini on line A, about 700 m away. Buses 30, 40, 62, 64, 81, 87 and 492 stop at Largo di Torre Argentina, 400 m away. From Termini, the 40 or 64 to Argentina is the most direct ride.

Twenty to forty minutes is plenty for the visit. Piazza Navona is a five-minute walk, the Trevi Fountain about ten. If you're travelling in a group of more than six, you'll need radio headsets inside, and group tickets require a licensed tour guide.

FAQ

Is the Pantheon free?

Not any more. The official ticket is €7 full price, €2 for EU citizens aged 18–25, and free for under-18s. It is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month, and during Mass for worshippers only.

How much is the Pantheon ticket?

€7 since 1 July, when the price rose from €5. Plenty of travel sites still quote €5, so ignore them.

Do I need to book the Pantheon in advance?

No. You can buy at the desks or ticket machines on site. Booking online on Musei Italiani gives you a time slot, but entry is still in order of arrival and there is no fast lane.

What are the Pantheon opening hours?

Daily 9:00–19:00, last entry 18:30. Ticket desks close at 18:00. Closed 25 December and 1 January unless a special opening is announced.

Do I need ID to visit the Pantheon?

Yes. Tickets are issued in a name, and staff check your ID or a copy of it. If the names don't match you may be refused, without a refund.

Do skip-the-line Pantheon tickets work?

The official page says there are no skip-the-line options: everyone enters in order of arrival. A reseller ticket bought in advance only spares you the ticket desk, which the official online ticket also does.
