Rome hop-on hop-off buses

City Sightseeing, Big Bus, I Love Rome, Green Line · private operators

Rome's hop-on hop-off buses are run by private companies, not by the city, so there is no single official price: each operator sets its own routes, stops and fares. Check which stops are actually running before you buy. Right now City Sightseeing and the Vatican&Rome bus included in the Omnia Card both skip the Colosseum.

Who runs the buses

There's no official city sightseeing bus in Rome. The hop-on hop-off lines belong to private operators: City Sightseeing, Big Bus, I Love Rome, Green Line Tours, and the Vatican&Rome open bus run by Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, the one bundled with the Omnia Card. Each has its own map, frequency, ticket lengths and audio commentary, and sells both on its own website and through Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout. That's why this page has no "official price", only the partners' current prices.

Check for suspended stops

Read the operator's notices, not just the route map. At the moment City Sightseeing is not serving its Colosseum stop and has also suspended stop 8 on its yellow line, Piazza Navona, until further notice. The Vatican&Rome bus has its Colosseum stop suspended too.

This matters most with a bus + Colosseum combo: your entry ticket is still valid, but you may have to get off at another stop and walk the last stretch. The narrow streets of the historic centre are off-limits to these buses anyway, so the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona always mean a walk.

When it's worth it

A hop-on hop-off ticket makes sense on your first day to get the layout of the city, with small children, if walking long distances is hard, or if you only have one day and want to see the big monuments from outside. The open top deck gets very hot in summer: go early or late.

It's poor value as transport. To get from A to B, ATAC buses and the metro run more often and cost less, and they're included in the Roma Pass. If you already have an OMNIA Card, the open bus is part of it, so don't buy a second one.

Variations

Besides 24- and 48-hour tickets, the partners sell evening tours, Colosseum combos, a hop-on hop-off boat on the Tiber, and cruise packages from Civitavecchia with a port transfer and the bus in Rome. Before paying, check when the validity starts, whether there's commentary in your language, and which stop is closest to where you're staying.

FAQ

How much is the hop-on hop-off bus in Rome?

It depends on the company and the ticket length; there's no official fare. Current prices from City Sightseeing, Big Bus, I Love Rome and Green Line are in the list on this page.

Does the hop-on hop-off bus stop at the Colosseum?

Not at the moment for every operator. City Sightseeing has suspended its Colosseum stop until further notice, and so has the Vatican&Rome open bus in the Omnia Card. Check the operator's live notices before buying.

Where are the hop-on hop-off stops in Rome?

Each company publishes its own numbered stop map on its website; Green Line also has an app that shows the route and stops. Stops differ between companies and can be suspended for roadworks or events.

Green Line, City Sightseeing or Big Bus: which is best?

Their central routes overlap a lot. Pick on practical grounds: the stop nearest your hotel, ticket length, and an audio guide in your language.

Is the hop-on hop-off bus included in the Roma Pass?

No. The Roma Pass covers ATAC city buses, trams and metro. The open bus is included in the OMNIA Card 24H and 72H.
