Buying a ticket
The Capitoline Museums belong to the City of Rome, not the Italian state, so state museum rules (free under-18s, €2 for EU 18–25s) don't apply here. The upside: no booking needed. Turn up, buy at the desk, cash or card, and you pay no fee.
If you'd rather have tickets in hand, you can buy online, by phone on 060608, or at the desk for a later date (card only). Each of those adds €1 pre-sale fee, and tickets can't be refunded or changed. Only do it if your date is firm.
Residents of Rome and its Metropolitan City enter free with ID. Everyone else pays the non-resident rate, which is what visitors see on the price list.
What you'll actually pay
The price follows the exhibition calendar. When a temporary show is part of the route, the non-resident ticket becomes "museum + exhibition": right now, with the "Angeli" exhibition extended to 10 January 2027, it's €16.50 full and €11 reduced. With no exhibition the ordinary ticket is €15 full and €9.50 reduced.
Some exhibitions are ticketed separately and not included in the museum ticket at all. Check the museum's ticket page and notices page before you go, since both change often.
Reductions apply to EU citizens aged 6 to 25 and over 65, and to working teachers. You show the proof at the gate, and if you can't, you pay the difference at the desk. Children under 6 and disabled visitors with a companion go free. Roma Pass holders get free or reduced entry depending on the pass.
Staying a few days? The Capitolini Card gives non-residents 7 days at the Capitoline Museums and the Centrale Montemartini, a former power station on Via Ostiense where Roman statues stand among turbines and boilers. It costs €15.50 full and €11.50 reduced; if exhibitions are on, the online shop may add a supplement.
What to see, and the corridor people miss
The museums fill two palaces on Michelangelo's piazza, Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo, joined by an underground gallery. From that gallery you climb into the Tabularium, the ancient Roman records office, whose arches look straight down over the Roman Forum. Some visitors follow the crowd and never take the detour. Don't skip it: it's one of the calmest Forum views in Rome, and it's included in your ticket.
Highlights: the Capitoline Wolf, the Spinario (boy pulling a thorn from his foot), the original bronze Marcus Aurelius indoors (the one on the piazza is a copy), the giant fragments of Constantine's statue in the courtyard, and the Dying Gaul and Capitoline Venus in Palazzo Nuovo. Allow about two and a half hours.
The museum rents its own audio guide at the desk for €4, in English, Italian, French, German and Spanish, and has an official app for iOS and Android.
Do you need a reseller?
For a museum with no booking requirement, buying plain entry from a reseller rarely makes sense: it costs more, and the desk sells same-day tickets without a fee. Resellers are useful for extras. Tiqets and GetYourGuide sell entry with a multimedia intro video or with an audio guide and Forum viewpoint; GetYourGuide also has private visits and myth-themed tours aimed at teenagers. Headout sells the Capitolini Card.
Opening hours: daily 9:30–19:30, last entry an hour before closing; 24 and 31 December until 14:00; closed 1 May and 25 December. The Capitoline Hill is a short walk from Piazza Venezia, where many buses from Termini stop. The nearest metro is Colosseo on line B, about ten minutes on foot along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
