How it works

There's no self-guided entry. Every visit is a guided tour of about an hour, leaving on the hour from 10am, with the last at 5pm, in Italian or English. Book online on the official site, run by La Paranza, the Sanità neighbourhood co-operative that manages both catacombs.

Official prices: €13 full, €9 for students, over-65s and police, €6 for under-18s, free under 6. Disabled visitors enter free; their companion pays €9. Campania Artecard holders pay €9; the card no longer gives free entry here.

The detail many visitors miss: your ticket is valid for 12 months at the other catacomb too. See San Gennaro today, use the same ticket for San Gaudioso later in your trip.

San Gennaro or San Gaudioso

San Gennaro (Via Capodimonte 13) is the big one: two levels cut into yellow tuff, unusually wide galleries compared with Rome's catacombs, the Crypt of the Bishops with 5th-century mosaics and an underground basilica. San Gaudioso (Via Sanità 123, beneath the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità) is smaller and known for its macabre burial rituals. If you only do one, do San Gennaro; the second comes free with the same ticket.

Before you go

Closed Wednesdays and 25 December. It's 15–22°C underground all year, so bring a sweater even in August. Step-free access at San Gennaro is temporarily closed for safety works.

Getting there

From the Archaeological Museum, take a bus from the Museo Nazionale stop (lines 650, C63, 3M, 168, 178, 204) to the Basilica Incoronata – Catacombe San Gennaro stop, about 15 minutes. There's free parking at the catacombs if you're driving. The San Gennaro ticket office is next to the Basilica del Buon Consiglio; San Gaudioso has its own at Via Sanità 123.
