How it works

The Galleria Borbonica is a tunnel from the Bourbon era, designed by Errico Alvino and now run by a cultural association. It opens only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, at fixed times, always with a guide. Book the Standard route online on the official site, choosing your entrance; the Adventure route is booked by phone or email.

There are three entrances and they're not interchangeable:

• Vico del Grottone 4, about 100 m from Piazza del Plebiscito: Standard route.
• Via Domenico Morelli 61, inside the Morelli car park towards Piazza Vittoria: Standard and Adventure. It's the only one where 60% of the route is wheelchair-accessible.
• Via Monte di Dio 14, Palazzo Serra di Cassano: the Via delle Memorie route.

Routes and prices

Standard route, about an hour: €15 full, €10 for ages 6–18, over-70s and police, €7 for disabled visitors, free up to 5. You pass through Renaissance-era cisterns of the Bolla aqueduct, WWII shelters full of everyday objects, and the vintage cars and motorbikes found buried under rubble from the years the tunnel served as a municipal impound. Fine for children and for most people who dislike tight spaces.

Adventure route, about 1 hour 25 minutes: €20 flat, from age 10 with an adult, and 10–15-year-olds must show ID. Helmet, torch and a short crawl-way to a late-15th-century cistern. Not recommended if you're claustrophobic or have mobility issues; Morelli entrance only.

Pairing it

The Vico del Grottone entrance is a short walk from Piazza del Plebiscito, so a Saturday morning can be the Royal Palace followed by the noon tunnel tour. Just don't confuse it with Napoli Sotterranea, which starts at Piazza San Gaetano in the old town.
