Reseller prices are refreshed daily; the final price is the one on the partner's site. Resellers cost more than the official ticket because they add availability, free cancellation or services.
How tickets work
Herculaneum is the easy one. There is a single entry ticket, €16, with no name on it and no entry window. Buy it online through CoopCulture, the park's official ticket shop, and show the QR code at the turnstile, or buy it at the ticket office when you arrive.
The €2 reduced ticket is for 18 to 24-year-olds. Under-18s of any nationality are free under the Ministry's rules.
There's no combined ticket with Pompeii. The park's own FAQ says so: each site has its own ticket and ticket office. Anything sold as "Pompeii + Herculaneum" is two separate entries packaged with a transfer or a guide.
Free days: the first Sunday of every month, plus 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. On those days there's nothing to buy online, so you collect a free ticket at the ticket office.
What's closed right now
Two well-known parts are shut. The Villa of the Papyri is closed for excavation and accessibility works, with no reopening date announced. The Ancient Theatre is closed until further notice for maintenance. If a tour description promises either, ask before you pay.
Everything else in the excavated town is open, and this is where Herculaneum differs from Pompeii: houses with upper floors, carbonised wooden beams, doors and furniture, well-preserved baths and the arched boat sheds on what was the ancient beach. It's smaller than Pompeii but you see far more detail per square metre.
Official ticket or a reseller?
If all you need is entry, buy the official ticket. It's cheaper and there's no slot to lose. Resellers make sense for extras:
- Audio guide. GetYourGuide and Headout bundle one with entry. Worth having, because on-site signage is minimal.
- Guided tour. Two hours with an archaeologist covers the carbonised wood, graffiti and boat sheds you'd otherwise walk straight past.
- Day trip from Naples. Herculaneum pairs naturally with Vesuvius, since the shuttles up to the crater leave from Ercolano Scavi station. It also pairs with Pompeii.
Getting there and on-site tips
From Napoli Centrale, buy a ticket to Ercolano Scavi and take the Circumvesuviana on the Naples–Sorrento line. From the station it's about a 6-minute walk to the entrance at Corso Resina 187. From the airport, take the Alibus to the central station first.
Left luggage is free, and you'll need it if you're travelling with a suitcase: bags inside are limited to 35×30×15 cm. There's no café inside the site, only vending machines near the entrance bridge, so bring water. Children under 12 must be with an adult. Dogs are allowed on a lead, but must be carried in the mosaic-floored houses and the boat pavilion.
Watch the closing time. The excavation must be cleared before the gates close (by 4:40pm in winter, 7pm in summer), because the exits are up on Corso Resina and via dei Papiri Ercolanesi. Doing Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day? Do Pompeii in the morning and Herculaneum after lunch, since its summer last entry is 6pm. In winter both sites stop letting people in at 3:30pm, which makes it a rush.
FAQ
How much are Herculaneum tickets?
€16 full price and €2 for visitors aged 18 to 24. Under-18s go free, as at all Italian state sites.
Do I need to book Herculaneum in advance?
No. You can buy at the ticket office on arrival, or online through CoopCulture and show the QR code at the turnstile. There are no timed slots.
What are Herculaneum's opening hours?
16 March–14 October 8:30am–7:30pm, last entry 6pm. 15 October–15 March 8:30am–5pm, last entry 3:30pm. Open daily except 25 December.
Is there a combined Pompeii and Herculaneum ticket?
No. The park states you need a separate ticket for each site. Tours sold as 'Pompeii + Herculaneum' bundle two tickets, usually with transport or a guide.
How do I get to Herculaneum from Naples?
Take the Circumvesuviana Naples–Sorrento line from Napoli Centrale to Ercolano Scavi, then walk about 6 minutes to the entrance at Corso Resina 187.
Is Herculaneum free on the first Sunday?
Yes, and also on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. There's no online booking on those days; you pick up the free ticket at the ticket office.
