Amalfi Coast: Positano, Amalfi, Ravello
No entry ticket · you pay for transport and tours
There's no ticket for the Amalfi Coast itself: what you pay for is getting around. Independently, that means Travelmar ferries (Amalfi–Positano €10, Salerno–Amalfi €12) and SITA buses, whose COSTIERASITA ticket costs €10 for 24 hours. A tour costs more but takes the ferry-and-bus juggling off your hands.

No entry ticket, just transport
Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are towns, not attractions with turnstiles. What you pay for is getting between them, and that's what makes or breaks the day. The coast road is narrow and slow in high season. The sea is quicker, but you're tied to boat timetables.
You have three options: scheduled ferries, SITA buses, or a tour that handles it all for you.
Doing it yourself: Travelmar ferries and SITA buses
Travelmar links Salerno, Amalfi, Positano and the smaller towns in between. Current published fares:
- Amalfi–Positano €10, about 25 minutes
- Salerno–Amalfi €12, about 35 minutes
- Salerno–Positano €17, about 70 minutes
Amalfi is the hub, and many sailings to the smaller towns involve a change of boat there. Check the timetable currently in force on Travelmar's site before planning your return. Some stops, such as Vietri sul Mare, only operate until 31 October.
SITA Sud runs the coastal buses. The ticket to get is the COSTIERASITA: €10 for 24 hours from first validation, with unlimited rides between Sorrento, Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Ravello, Maiori, Minori, Salerno and the other coastal towns. Three rules catch visitors out:
- It's personal. You have to write your name and date of birth on it in pen, and it can't be shared.
- Validate it on your first ride. If the validating machine is missing or broken, SITA's rule is to validate it by hand.
- It also covers Agerola, the starting point for the Path of the Gods.
Buy it at the SITA office on Via Vinciprova in Salerno (weekdays 6:45am–6:45pm) or at outlets authorised for Unico Campania tickets. If you're catching an early bus, get it the day before. The Campania Artecard doesn't cover SITA lines to Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi.
When a tour is worth it
A tour costs more than ferry and bus fares, but it solves three problems: connections, the evening trip back, and parking, which on this coast is a sport in itself. The main formats:
- By minivan from Naples: Positano and Amalfi, often Ravello too, in one day. Tiqets has small-group versions with a guide.
- By boat from Sorrento or Naples: you see Positano and Amalfi from the water. It's the most relaxed option, but it depends on the weather.
- From Rome: long days with a fast train or coach plus a stretch by boat. Only worth it if you really have no other day in the south.
When comparing tours, check how much free time you get in each town and whether hotel pick-up is included.
Planning the day
With one day, pick two towns, not three. Positano is best seen from the sea and on the walk down to the beach. Amalfi has the most boat connections, so it makes a good base for moving around. Ravello sits up in the hills, is reached by bus from Amalfi, and deserves at least half a day.
Based in Sorrento? The SITA bus with a COSTIERASITA ticket takes you to Positano and Amalfi and back on the same 24-hour ticket. Based in Salerno? The ferry is the easiest way to reach Amalfi and Positano, and it keeps you off the coast road at its busiest.
FAQ
How much is the ferry from Amalfi to Positano?
Travelmar charges €10 for Amalfi–Positano, about 25 minutes. Salerno–Amalfi is €12 and Salerno–Positano €17.
How much is the bus from Sorrento to Positano?
The SITA COSTIERASITA ticket costs €10 and gives unlimited SITA bus travel for 24 hours from first validation, covering Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Salerno and the towns in between.
Do you need a ticket to visit Positano or Amalfi?
No. The towns are free to walk around; you only pay for transport, tours and any paid sights.
Is an Amalfi Coast tour worth it?
If you're day-tripping from Naples, Sorrento or Rome, often yes: it costs more than buses and ferries but removes the connections and the evening return. If you're staying on the coast, public transport is usually enough.
Does the Campania Artecard cover Amalfi Coast buses?
No. SITA Sud lines to Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi are excluded from the transport included in the Artecard.
Where do I buy SITA bus tickets?
At the SITA ticket office on Via Vinciprova in Salerno, open on weekdays 6:45am–6:45pm, and at outlets authorised to sell Unico Campania tickets, listed on unicocampania.it.
