Capri & the Blue Grotto: tickets and boat tours
Entry and rowing boat are paid separately · opens only in calm seas
Blue Grotto entry costs €6 (€2 reduced), paid on the spot. On top of that you always pay for the small rowing boat that takes you inside, which has its own ticket, plus the boat that gets you to the cave. Nobody can promise it will be open: the boatmen decide at 9am by looking at the sea.

Reseller prices are refreshed daily; the final price is the one on the partner's site. Resellers cost more than the official ticket because they add availability, free cancellation or services.
What you pay for at the Blue Grotto, and to whom
The Blue Grotto is state property with its own ticket: €6 full, €2 reduced, and free for anyone under 18. You pay it on site. Booking is optional and free online through CoopCulture. Entry is capped, so without a booking you only get in if there's room.
That €6 is only part of the bill. To get inside you need:
- A boat to the cave mouth, usually from Marina Grande, the main port.
- A ride in one of the small rowing boats that slip through the opening, which is only about a metre high. This is ticketed separately from the entry fee.
- The state entry ticket itself.
Be wary of tours that say "Blue Grotto included" without explaining what that covers. The Motoscafisti di Capri, the boat cooperative at pier 0 in Marina Grande, says in its FAQ that the grotto ticket is always paid at the entrance, whatever other companies advertise.
When it's open, and when it isn't
Official hours are April–October 9am–6pm (6:30pm on busy days) and November–March 9am–2pm, last entry 1:30pm. There's no weekly closing day.
The sea sets the real timetable. With a metre-high entrance, rough water or a high tide means no entry, and boatmen only check at 9am each day. If the grotto is the main reason for your trip, keep a second day free, or pick a tour that circles the island anyway so the day isn't wasted. In winter the window is short, so be on the island in the morning.
From Marina Grande and back, the Motoscafisti allow about an hour for a grotto trip, including the wait at the entrance. The time inside the cave itself is a few minutes.
Boat tours around Capri
From Marina Grande, the full island tour takes about 2 hours and includes a stop at the Blue Grotto. Those who want to go in transfer to a rowing boat; the rest stay aboard. You'll see the Faraglioni rocks and stretches of cliff you can't reach on foot. Tickets are sold at the pier, and buying online lets you skip the ticket queue at pier 0.
Reseller tours are mainly worth it if you aren't staying on Capri:
- From Naples: Tiqets sells day trips combining the ferry with an island boat tour, some with a guide for Capri and Anacapri.
- From Sorrento: boat tours round the island, with the grotto as an option.
- From Positano, Praiano or Amalfi: GetYourGuide has full-day boat tours to Capri that skip the scheduled ferries entirely.
They cost more than doing it yourself, but they take care of the most tiring part of a Capri day: juggling ports, boats and ferry times.
Ferries to Capri: official fares
If you go independently, Caremar's published passenger fares are Naples–Capri €14.80 on the conventional ferry and €21.50 on the fast ship, and Sorrento–Capri €17.40 on the fast ship. Caremar adds a €5 Capri landing ticket to fares to the island. Buy up to the day before and a 12% advance-sale surcharge applies (minimum €1); online tickets carry a €1 supplement. Children under 4 travel free on conventional ferries, and under 2 on fast craft.
Coming back is the tricky part. Check the return times before you go, and if you have a train or flight that evening, don't rely on the last boat.
FAQ
How much does the Blue Grotto cost?
The state entry ticket is €6, or €2 reduced, and under-18s don't pay it. The rowing boat that takes you inside has its own separate ticket, and you also need a boat to get to the cave.
Is Blue Grotto entry included in Capri boat tours?
Usually not. Even Capri's own boat cooperative, the Motoscafisti di Capri, says the entry is always paid at the cave mouth to a different operator. Read the tour description carefully.
What are the Blue Grotto opening hours?
April–October 9am–6pm (6:30pm when busy); November–March 9am–2pm, last entry 1:30pm. No weekly closing day, but it shuts in rough seas.
How do I know if the Blue Grotto is open today?
You can't know in advance. Every morning at 9am the boatmen check the cave mouth; in rough sea or at high tide it stays closed.
How much is the ferry from Naples to Capri?
Caremar charges €14.80 on the conventional ferry and €21.50 on the fast ship, plus a €5 Capri landing ticket. Sorrento–Capri on the fast ship is €17.40.
Can you swim in the Blue Grotto?
No. During the day it's practically impossible because of the constant boat traffic, and entering after closing time is forbidden by law.
