How Vesuvius tickets work
The crater is visited on path no. 5, "Il Gran Cono", which starts from the car park at 1,000 m above Herculaneum. Vesuvius National Park sells tickets online only, through Vivaticket. There's no ticket office at the top, and the park says Vivaticket is the only authorised seller.
What you need to know:
- €10 full, €8 reduced (under-25s of any nationality and residents of the 13 park towns). With the booking fee you pay €11.68 or €9.55, by credit card.
- Tickets are released 30 days ahead, 50 for every 10-minute slot. Book as soon as your date is fixed in summer.
- There's flexibility on timing: you can go in from 2 hours before to 2 hours after the time on your ticket, within opening hours. Handy if your train or bus runs late.
- Sold out? Ten last-minute tickets per slot are released 30 minutes before it. You can only buy them on the wifi network near the entrance, up to five per email address. They carry each visitor's name and are checked against ID.
- Under-6s are free but still need a (free) online ticket.
If you buy a transport package from a reseller, check that the Gran Cono entry is included and at what time. That booked slot, not the bus time, decides when you walk up.
Getting to the 1,000 m car park
This is where most people get stuck. There's no parking at the trailhead and currently no public toilets there. Drivers leave the car along the provincial road in parking run by the town of Herculaneum, then walk up about 1.8 km (30 minutes) or take the town shuttle for €1 each way. The park suggests paying for parking only after you have your crater ticket.
Without a car:
- From Pompei Villa dei Misteri station (Circumvesuviana), an EAV public bus goes up to Vesuvius.
- From Ercolano Scavi station, taxis and private shuttles run to the crater car park. The Vesuvio Express offered on Tiqets leaves from here.
This is where transport packages earn their price. You get a ride and an entry slot that line up, with no connections to work out. There are versions from Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and combos with Pompeii or Herculaneum on the same day.
Opening hours and weather closures
Crater access starts at 9am and ends at 3pm (November–February), 4pm (March, October), 5pm (April–June, September) or 6pm (July, August). You must finish within an hour of the last permitted access.
On days when the regional civil protection agency issues an orange weather alert or higher, ticket sales and the trail shut automatically. The park also posts one-off closures on its news page, for example when the access road is closed for an event, so check the night before. If the trail closes, the park refunds the ticket including the booking fee.
The view depends entirely on haze. On a clear day, the park says, you can see the whole Bay of Naples and as far as Monte Circeo. On a hazy summer afternoon you mostly see the crater itself.
The walk itself
The trail is about 4 km return on loose volcanic ash and gravel, climbing to 1,175 m. Allow up to 2 hours for the standard out-and-back. The upper rim on the north and east side is closed to visitors. Groups on the trail above 1,000 m are accompanied by guides from the park's permanent volcano service.
Wear proper shoes rather than sandals, since the park specifically asks for suitable footwear. Bring water and a layer even in summer, because it's cooler and windier at the top than down in Naples.
