Reseller prices are refreshed daily; the final price is the one on the partner's site. Resellers cost more than the official ticket because they add availability, free cancellation or services.

One ticket, the whole complex

Since 2012 the basilica and the former convent museum have been visited on a single ticket, now €7.50. It covers the church with its frescoed chapels, the sacristy and the Avelli cemetery, plus the museum: the Cloister of the Dead, the Green Cloister, the Spanish Chapel, the Ubriachi Chapel and the Refectory.

Ages 11 to 17 pay €5 with ID; under-11s are free. There's no EU age discount here and no free first Sunday: this isn't run like the state museums. Free entry is limited to set categories such as Florence residents, disabled visitors with a companion and clergy. You can always step in to pray or attend Mass without a ticket, but not to sightsee.

The opening hours are different every few days

Write these down:

Religious holidays are 1 and 6 January, Easter, 15 August, 1 November, 8 and 25 December. Last entry is an hour before closing, so on a Sunday you have barely three hours. On Good Friday and Holy Saturday it's open for prayer only.

Booking and audio guides

You don't need to book. Buy at the desk on the day; the official online option is the Museo di Santa Maria Novella website. The audio guides sold by Tiqets and GetYourGuide cost more than the desk ticket. What you pay for is the commentary, and it helps in front of Masaccio's Trinity, an early lesson in perspective, or in the Tornabuoni Chapel, where Ghirlandaio filled the walls with Florentines of his day.

Right by the station, but no suitcases

The ticket office is on Piazza della Stazione, facing Florence's main station, so the basilica fits neatly into the hour before a train. The catch: bulky bags and trolleys aren't allowed inside, so drop your suitcase at left luggage first.

Wear clothes suitable for a church, skip the flash and tripod, and keep the phone in your pocket. Don't miss Masaccio's Trinity, Giotto's Crucifix, Brunelleschi's wooden Crucifix and the frescoes by Ghirlandaio and Filippino Lippi.
