Two passes, both from the cathedral's own office

The Opera della Metropolitana, the body that runs the complex, sells two passes on its site:

Both include a free audio guide on your own smartphone, so bring earphones and a charged phone. If a reseller offers you the pass "with audio guide" as an upgrade, remember the official one already has it.

The floor: check the dates before you book the trip

The inlaid marble floor, 56 panels made over six centuries, is what many people come for. For most of the year it's kept under protective covers. It's uncovered only in set windows; in the current calendar, 27 June to 31 July and 18 August to 15 November. During those weeks the pass costs €16 and Masses move to the church of Santissima Annunziata.

Hours, and the Sunday trap

The complex keeps seasonal hours:

Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. On 1 December, the city's patron saint's day, the cathedral closes at 3 pm.

The trap: on Sundays and public holidays only the cathedral opens late, at 1:30 pm; the morning has Masses at 8, 11 and 12:15. The museum, crypt and baptistery keep weekday hours. On a Sunday morning, start with those and save the cathedral for the afternoon.

Where to buy, and when a reseller is worth it

Buy the pass online from the Opera, by phone on +39 0577 286300, or at the ticket offices at Piazza Duomo 7 and the "Dear Guests" visitor centre at Via di Città 48, a short walk from the Campo. The Gate of Heaven is sold only online, or at the ticket office while places last; it's the one ticket worth securing ahead.

Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout sell the OPA SI Pass, cathedral and library tickets and guided visits, all above the official price. Worth it if you want a live guide or one of the early-morning visits with the cathedral's key keeper, before the doors open to the public. For plain entry, the official site is cheaper and already includes the audio guide.

Planning the visit

A sensible order: cathedral and Piccolomini Library first, then the crypt and baptistery, and finally the Opera Museum with the Facciatone panorama at the top. With three days' validity you can split it up.

You can't drive to the cathedral; it's inside the historic centre. The Opera suggests the Siena Ovest exit for the Duomo car park, or Siena Sud for the Il Campo car park, then walk up.
