The ticket combinations
There's no single "tower ticket". The Opera della Primaziale Pisana, which runs the square, sells combinations, and the tower always comes with the Cathedral:
- Tower + Cathedral: €20, timed.
- Complete + Tower: €27. Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo Museum and Sinopie Museum.
- Complete without the Tower: €11.
- Cathedral + one monument: €8. Pick the Baptistery, Camposanto, Opera Museum or Sinopie.
If you're climbing anyway, €7 more gets you the whole square. Tickets without the tower stay valid for a year from the chosen date, so there's no need to cram it all into one afternoon.
There are no reductions on the tower, for students, seniors or anyone else. Disabled visitors and one companion can climb free in limited time bands, by emailing accessibility(at)opapisa.it at least five days ahead.
Buying from the official site: the rules that bite
Online sales open 90 days before your date. You pay by Visa or Mastercard, in euros only, and the buyer must be 18 or over. The ticket offices on the square sell from 15 days ahead, cash or card.
Three things catch people out:
- Your slot is fixed. The time is printed on the ticket, and being late, for any reason, means no climb and no refund. If you're coming by train from Florence or off a cruise ship, leave a real buffer.
- You can't change the date. Online orders let you change the tower time or cancel the whole order up to two hours before, but not move the day. You cancel and rebuy.
- Only the official PDF counts. On your phone is fine, as long as the barcode scans.
Tower slots are capped. If the time you need has gone on the official site, Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout sometimes still have space, at a higher price. A reseller also makes sense if you want a guide: the Opera doesn't run guided tours itself.
The climb
About 30 minutes, 251 steps on foot, on worn and slippery stone. Staff give a short introduction to the tower's history before you go up. It isn't recommended for people with heart or mobility problems.
Before the climb there's a metal detector, and all bags, even small ones, go in the free cloakroom, which keeps the same hours as the tower. Be there at least 15 minutes before your slot.
Children under 8 can't climb, and the rule goes by birth year, not birthday: a child turning 8 later this year is allowed. Under-18s must be with an adult, and staff may ask for ID proving age, so bring passports.
Hours
The square is open every day, but hours change with the season and differ between monuments; the Opera publishes a day-by-day calendar on its site. Entry closes 30 minutes before closing time. The cathedral opens to visitors at 10 am, and on Sundays and religious holidays times can shift around Mass, when access is limited and photos aren't allowed. The ticket offices are at the entrances to the square.
Free cathedral, with a catch
The cathedral costs nothing. Any ticket gives you a free, untimed cathedral entry. If you only want the cathedral, the free passes are timed, limited and handed out only at the ticket offices on the square; you can't book them online. Children under 11 with an adult and disabled visitors with a companion enter the cathedral and the other monuments without a ticket (not the tower).
It's a working church, so dress accordingly. If your shoulders are bare, the museum bookshops sell stoles.
Getting there
From Pisa Centrale, bus 1+ leaves the Stazione 1 stop (towards Park Pietrasantina) every 10 minutes and drops you at Torre 1. From Pisa airport, take the PisaMover shuttle to Pisa Centrale, then the bus. Coming from Florence by train, you arrive at Pisa Centrale and take the same bus; day trips sold by GetYourGuide and Headout handle the transport and the tower slot for you.
Large luggage isn't allowed in the monuments; the maximum is a small bag of 20 x 30 x 38 cm. The public toilets on the square cost €1, card only, but are free with a monuments ticket.
