Matera Sassi: tickets and guided tours
The Sassi are free to walk · each site has its own ticket · Casa Noha closed Wednesdays
There is no ticket for the Sassi of Matera: they're neighbourhoods of the city and you can walk them freely. You pay to go inside individual places, such as the FAI's Casa Noha (€7), the National Museum at Palazzo Lanfranchi (€10), cave houses and rock-cut churches. The real decision is whether to explore alone or with a guide.

The Sassi are free; the doors cost money
People search for "Matera tickets" expecting a single gate, like Pompeii. There isn't one. The Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso are working neighbourhoods with homes, guesthouses and restaurants, and the streets are public. You can walk from the Civita down to the Caveoso without showing anything to anyone. You pay when you step through a door: a furnished cave house, a rock-cut church, a museum, an underground cistern. Each site has its own operator and ticket, and we found no official city pass that covers them all.
So your budget depends on how many doors you open. Doing Casa Noha and Palazzo Lanfranchi on your own comes to €17 per adult. A group walking tour often already includes a cave house and a church, which is the simplest way to avoid buying three separate tickets.
Which tickets are worth it
Casa Noha belongs to the FAI and sits in Recinto Cavone, a short walk below the Cathedral via Via San Potito. It's the best first stop: an immersive film on the history of Matera, then the house, 30–40 minutes in all. Tickets are €7, €3 for ages 6–18, free up to age 5, sold online by the FAI with no booking fee. It's closed on Wednesdays, so if Wednesday is your only day in town, skip it.
Palazzo Lanfranchi, home of the National Museum of Matera, costs €10. A 2-day pass to all the National Museum venues is €15, and anyone under 18 gets in free (no nationality condition stated). It opens 9:00–20:00 with last entry at 19:00, except Tuesdays, when it opens at 14:00. The Ridola archaeological museum is temporarily closed for refurbishment.
The Palombaro Lungo, the huge cistern under Piazza Vittorio Veneto, and the rock churches each have their own operators and tickets, which we couldn't confirm on an up-to-date official source; ask at the desk.
Guided tour, eco-bus or solo
Guided walks are Matera's best-selling product for a practical reason: the Sassi are a multi-level maze and the interesting parts are behind closed doors. GetYourGuide and Tiqets sell walking tours in English, Spanish, German and Italian that usually include a cave house and a rock church. Read the product page to see whether entry fees are included.
With small children, limited mobility or a tight schedule, the open-top eco-bus and vintage-car tours make sense. You see less from inside but skip a lot of steps, and the Sassi are mostly steps. Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip either way.
Timing and getting there
One full day covers the Sassi, Casa Noha and one museum. Give it two if you also want the Murgia park across the ravine, with the classic view back over the Sassi. Early morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable times to walk. Casa Noha closes at 19:00 in October and 17:00 in November and December, last entry an hour earlier.
Matera is in Basilicata, but most visitors come from Puglia. FAL trains and buses connect Bari with Matera, and the Pugliairbus runs from the Puglia airports. Many people pair Matera with Alberobello on a day trip from Bari, and GetYourGuide sells several coach tours that do both. It's a long day that leaves time for a guided walk in Matera, not for museums.
