Two routes, always with a guide

There's no self-guided option at Castellana: every visit leaves at a set time with a guide and runs about 70 metres below ground. Your first choice is the route. The full tour is 3 km, about 100 minutes, and ends in the Grotta Bianca, the White Cave, whose glittering alabaster is the reason most people come. The short tour stops after 1 km, about 50 minutes, and doesn't reach the White Cave.

Ticket-desk prices: adults (15+) €25 for the full route, €22 for the short one; ages 6–14 €22 and €19. Under-6s go free with an ID document proving age. The Family ticket (2 adults plus 2 children aged 6–14) is €61 including fees and is only sold online. Since the full route costs only €3 more, it's the obvious pick unless you have restless toddlers.

Online or at the desk: read this twice

The rules are a little back-to-front. Online sales stop the day before your visit: the official shop doesn't sell same-day tickets. The ticket desk, on the other hand, only sells for the same day, while places on the tours last. On busy days the slots you want may already be full. Online tickets carry booking and service fees, but they lock in your time and let you go straight to the turnstiles with the digital ticket. Be at the entrance shown on the ticket at least 15 minutes early.

Tiqets sells the guided tour with a time slot, which is handy if you already use the app or the official shop has run out of your preferred time.

What to bring

It's 14–18 °C underground all year, including August. Take a light jumper and wear trainers or flat rubber-soled shoes; the route itself is easy and suitable for all ages. Tour times change with the season and are listed on the official online shop's calendar; the caves are open all year. There's a paid toilet near the ticket office, and baby carriers can be borrowed for free.

Getting there

The caves are in Castellana Grotte, south-east of Bari, on Piazzale Anelli. Bari airport is 57 km away (about 46 minutes by car), Bari port 50 km and Brindisi airport 82 km. Car parks P1 and P2 near the caves are paid; P3, at the shopping centre on Via Putignano, is paid with a shuttle. Many visitors combine the caves with Alberobello and Polignano a Mare in a single day.
