What actually costs money
Alberobello has no ticket office. The two trulli districts, Rione Monti and Aia Piccola, are ordinary parts of town with homes, guesthouses and shops, and you can walk every lane for free. Many trulli in Rione Monti are souvenir and food shops: walking in is fine, just remember you're in a shop.
The paid entry worth your time is the Trullo Sovrano on Piazza Sacramento, a two-storey trullo kept as a house museum, with furnished rooms and a garden. A single ticket is €2.50, and online booking is optional. Mind the split hours: 10:00–12:45, then 15:30–18:00 (18:30 from April to October). Day tours that drop you in town over lunch will find it closed.
Day tours from Bari: what you're paying for
Most partner products for Alberobello aren't tickets but coach trips from Bari, often with Matera on the same day, or with Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. You're paying for transport and a tour leader, because Alberobello itself is free. Before booking, check two things: how many hours you'll actually have in Alberobello (under two means Rione Monti and little else), and whether Matera includes a guided walk or just free time.
If you have a car, an organised tour adds less. Without one, it's the simplest way to see Alberobello and Matera in the same day, a combination that's awkward on public transport. GetYourGuide also sells a guided walk with food tasting and a tuk-tuk tour with audio guide for people already in town.
Timing
Three to four hours is enough for both districts, the Trullo Sovrano and the trullo church of Sant'Antonio at the top of Rione Monti. If you're driving and can choose your time, late afternoon light on the stone roofs is best for photos, and the Trullo Sovrano reopens at 15:30. Alberobello also slots neatly into a driving loop with the Castellana Caves, which have their own timed, guided-only tickets.
FAQ
Do you have to pay to visit the trulli?
No. Rione Monti and Aia Piccola are lived-in districts and free to walk. You only pay for house museums such as the Trullo Sovrano, and for tours.
How much is the Trullo Sovrano?
A single ticket costs €2.50. It's on Piazza Sacramento, and you can book online if you like, but there's no need.
What are the Trullo Sovrano's opening hours?
November–March 10:00–12:45 and 15:30–18:00; April–October 10:00–12:45 and 15:30–18:30. It closes over lunch.
Is half a day enough for Alberobello?
Yes. Three to four hours covers both trulli districts, the Trullo Sovrano and the trullo-shaped church of Sant'Antonio. That's why most people pair it with Matera, the Castellana Caves or Polignano a Mare.
Can I go inside a trullo?
Yes: the Trullo Sovrano is a furnished house museum, and many trulli in Rione Monti are shops you can walk into. Remember the shops are businesses, not exhibits.
Is a day tour from Bari worth it?
Without a car, a coach tour is the easiest way to combine Alberobello and Matera in one day. Check how long you actually get in each town before booking.
