How ferry tickets work
The public boats are run by Navigazione Lago di Como. You can't reserve a seat: buy online or at the ticket office on the pier and take the next boat. The fares that matter:
- Como–Bellagio: €12 one way on the regular boats, double for a return.
- Fast service (hydrofoil or catamaran): the same fare plus a €5 supplement on Como–Bellagio, paid at the departure pier.
- Bellagio–Varenna: €5.50 one way.
- 1-day unlimited ticket: €17.50 on Bellagio–Varenna, €27 on Como–Bellagio.
A day pass is valid only between the piers it's issued for, with stops in between. On Bellagio–Varenna, three single rides still cost less than the pass; it pays from the fourth. On Como–Bellagio a return costs €24 and the pass €27: for €3 more you can hop off at Lenno for Villa del Balbianello and get back on, which is usually worth it.
Children from 4 to 11 pay a reduced fare and over-65s get a weekday discount. Families: with two full-price adult day passes, up to two kids travel free (the "Happy Family" offer).
Villa del Balbianello: booking required
The villa where Star Wars and 007 scenes were shot is the most searched spot on the lake, and the only one where you'll be turned away without a booking. FAI, the Italian heritage trust that runs it, sells two tickets:
- Gardens only, €15 (€11 ages 6–18 and students up to 25).
- Villa and gardens, €25 (€17 reduced). The interiors can only be seen on a 50-minute guided tour, in English or Italian, in groups of up to 16.
The time slot you book is your entry to the grounds, not the tour. The tour time is given at the ticket desk when you arrive, and the wait can be up to 60 minutes, so leave slack before your boat back.
There's no car access. From Lenno it's a 1 km walk uphill, partly on gravel, about 25 minutes; or book a private taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno. Children up to 5 and FAI members get in free.
Winter opening is patchy: daily 10 am–5 pm in November, selected dates only in December and January, back to normal from mid-March.
Planning a day from Milan
Trenord trains reach Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes and Varenna in about 64 minutes from Milano Centrale, no changes. Two routes that work:
- Via Varenna: train to Varenna, ferry to Bellagio (and Menaggio if you like), back to Varenna and the train. Short hops, cheap tickets.
- Via Como: train to Como, slow boat to Lenno for Balbianello, on to Bellagio, then back to Como on the Como–Bellagio day pass. Longer, but it's the classic postcard day.
Lake Como in winter
From 2 November 2026 to 14 March 2027 the winter ferry timetable applies, with fewer sailings. Download it from the Navigazione site and check the last boat back before you commit to lunch. It's the quietest time to see Bellagio, provided you accept some villas being closed.
Day tours from Milan
Tiqets, GetYourGuide and Headout sell day trips from Milan: coach to the lake, a cruise or private boat, stops in Bellagio and Varenna and often Lugano. They cost more than doing it yourself by train and ferry, but they remove the timetable puzzle, which in winter is real. If Balbianello matters to you, check in the listing that villa entry is included rather than a view from the boat.
FAQ
How much is the ferry from Como to Bellagio?
€12 one way for an adult on the regular (slow) boats, double for a return. Hydrofoils and catamarans add a €5 fast-service supplement on that route.
How much is the ferry between Bellagio and Varenna?
€5.50 one way. If you'll ride that stretch four times or more, the €17.50 Bellagio–Varenna day pass is cheaper.
Do I need to book Villa del Balbianello tickets?
Yes, booking is compulsory even for the gardens. Buy on the FAI website (no booking fee): €15 gardens only, €25 villa and gardens with a guided tour in English or Italian.
How do I get to Villa del Balbianello?
Not by car. Walk about 1 km uphill from Lenno (around 25 minutes, partly gravel) or take a paid taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno, run by a private operator.
Do the Lake Como ferries run in winter?
Yes, on a reduced winter timetable from 2 November 2026 to 14 March 2027. Check the last return boat before you plan lunch.
How do I get from Milan to Lake Como?
Trenord trains run without changes from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes and to Varenna in about 64 minutes, with hourly departures.
Are there ferry discounts for kids and seniors?
Children from 4 to 11 pay a reduced fare; over-65s get a discount Monday to Friday. With two full-price adult day passes, up to two children travel free.
