Two trains, one line
"The little red train" covers two different services on the same Tirano–St. Moritz line, both run by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB):
- Bernina Express: panoramic cars with windows up into the roof, at-seat catering, and a compulsory seat reservation.
- Regional trains: same route, same viaducts and passes, but standard carriages and no catering. Reservation is optional at CHF 5 per person in either class, and RhB strongly recommends it because demand is high.
The fare is the same either way; only the supplement changes. If you care about the scenery more than the panoramic windows, a regional train with a CHF 5 reservation saves a lot.
What it really costs
RhB prices are in Swiss francs, VAT included, excluding supplements:
- St. Moritz–Tirano: CHF 35 second class, CHF 60 first; CHF 70 return in second;
- Bernina Express reservation, short route: CHF 32 per journey, year-round.
So one way in second class on the Bernina Express is CHF 67 with the reservation, a return CHF 134. Under-6s ride free; ages 6–16 pay half the fare but the full reservation. Swiss Pass, Eurail, Interrail and the Swiss half-fare card cover the fare only.
Bookings open for the whole timetable year, which usually ends in early-to-mid December. Book online, by phone on +41 81 288 65 65, or at any rail ticket office in Europe. Bring a card: no cash on board.
Getting there from Milan
The train starts in Tirano, on the Italian side. From Milano Centrale, Trenord runs direct trains to Tirano in about 2 hours 30 minutes, hourly, for €12.50 in second class. A day trip is doable but long: check your return Bernina departure before you buy anything.
From 29 October to 13 November 2026, Bernina Express trains 951 and 952 to and from Chur are diverted via the Vereina tunnel for engineering works. The notice doesn't mention the short-route St. Moritz–Tirano trains, but recheck if your route runs through Chur.
Organised day trips
GetYourGuide sells full days from Milan or Como with the Bernina Express and a stop in St. Moritz, transfers included. Much pricier than doing it yourself with Trenord and RhB, but it takes care of reservations, connections and francs; worth it with kids or if you don't want to gamble on the Tirano connection.
